Continue watching for Lady M:

Image
We all know Lady Macbeth has a hunger for power and deceit, but when she's not plotting schemes such as ways to convince her husband of committing murder, she gotta be catching up on all her fave shows. What shows is Lady M indulging in, you might ask? Let's see... #1. Queer Eye Watching straight men get a total makeover, personality-wise and physically, is something that is always satisfying to watch. Well, Lady Macbeth thinks so too. In Queer Eye, experts Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness, take men in need of a lifestyle makeover and basically turn them into a new person in a week. At the end of the week, these men have a party to show off their new lifestyle and look. The close family and friends of these men usually barely recognize them, as they completely upgraded from what they were before. Once Macbeth murders Duncan, Lady Macbeth predicts that he will really need a makeover if he wants to appear innocent. She tells him ...

What controls our life?

Do you believe events in your life have been guided by  fate  or chance? Why or why not? Based on the text, what do you think Shakespeare's attitude was towards fate? Does Macbeth have any choice in his actions or was everything predetermined?  Use examples from the text as your support. In life, we all undergo events and experiences that either fills us with joy or make us wonder: what did I do to deserve this misery? Some of us validate these happenings with chance and some with fate. I'll say, as much as I wish I could just believe that my life has been and is guided by fate, my secular mind cannot accept it. Fate is controlled; it is that things happen because some power intended them to. Chance is that the things that happen are simply just random occurrences, or that happen without design. The way we handle the things that chance throws at us is a matter of choice. I believe that life is guided by chance and the events that we encounter lead us to certain ou...

Above, is my rendition of the "Reliquary Pendant with Queen Margaret of Sicily Blessed". It was made by an unknown artist, within the period of 1174-77. The birthplace of this pendant is Canterbury, England. Within a decade of the martyrdom of Thomas Beckett, Bishop Reginald of Bath gave this pendant to Queen Margaret of Sicily. The inside of it contained minute relics of the saint's bloodied vestments (garments associated with Christianity), which were once probably covered by a crystal. The Latin inscriptions on the front, list the relics that were once under a crystal:  “Of the blood of Saint Thomas martyr. Of his vestments stained with his blood: of the cloak, the belt, the hood, the shoe, the shirt.”  It is believed that the bishop presented the pendant to the queen on the day of her son's marriage in 1177 to the daughter of Henry ll. This is significant as the King initiated the murder of Thomas Beckett, chancellor and former friend to the bishop on Dece...

A Scent of Lust

Image
Sean John Fragrances, 2006, USA Lust is ranked as the least offensive of the seven deadly sins but in my opinion is one of the most prevalent in the media. Sexualization of women and men in advertising is a tactic that is used often, popularly in the 20th century and perhaps even more in the modern day. As lust being a sort of endless "battle" of human nature so to say, the saying that "sex sells" regarding advertising is most likely true. The advertisement above is a for a perfume called "Unforgivable Woman". The creator of this perfume is Sean John Combs or P Diddy as most millennials probably know him. By first glance at this ad, you're most likely already uncomfortable, considering he looks like he is forcing himself onto the woman. However, this was not the creator's intention. What were their intentions exactly? I'm not entirely sure, but that, no that definitely wasn't it. The ad shows a man (P Diddy) lustfully looking at...

The Meaning in a Name

In Beowulf , names have a lot of meaning and give context to where someone comes from. As many names in our society do, they may help us to understand peoples' backgrounds and historical significance. Just by sharing your name, someone can get an idea of where you may be from or your family's history. My name, for example, has Japanese origins coming from kanji characters (the Japanese writing system). Emi is made up of the characters 惠美, written in kanji. My parents chose this name because they wanted something that could be both American and Japanese. Emi is a very popular name in Japan, but it is also commonly used as a nickname for girls in America named Emily. The two kanji characters in my name have different meanings. The first one standing for "megumi", meaning blessing, and the second one "utsukushii", meaning beauty. By the time my parents had me, they had been trying to have a baby for years and years. When I was finally born six years after my s...

"Othering" - as seen through Wing Young Huie and Margaret Atwood

Image
Huie, Wing Y.  David and Lou.  2012. Minneapolis, MN. www.know.wingyounghuie.com. Accessed 20 September 2018. Wing Young Huie is an American photographer based in Duluth, Minnesota. His most known projects have taken place in Saint Paul and Lake Street corridor in Minneapolis. The chosen photograph titled David and Lou was taken in South Minneapolis in 2012. Looking at the image we see two men sitting on a porch. Their composure is casual, and it seems that they are having a conversation as friends. David and Lou is part of Wing Young Huie's project, We are the Other . In this series of photographs, Huie captures the cultural landscape of America, revealing what is hidden and what is in plain sight. The photographs, such as this one, present the ways people are mirrored culturally, and the "them" who make up "us". In Huie's description of David and Lou , it is disclosed that the two men are "brothers from another mother", who met when one of t...
