Continue watching for Lady M:
We all know Lady Macbeth has a hunger for power and deceit, but when she's not plotting schemes such as ways to convince her husband of committing murder, she gotta be catching up on all her fave shows. What shows is Lady M indulging in, you might ask? Let's see...
Watching straight men get a total makeover, personality-wise and physically, is something that is always satisfying to watch. Well, Lady Macbeth thinks so too. In Queer Eye, experts Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness, take men in need of a lifestyle makeover and basically turn them into a new person in a week. At the end of the week, these men have a party to show off their new lifestyle and look. The close family and friends of these men usually barely recognize them, as they completely upgraded from what they were before.
Once Macbeth murders Duncan, Lady Macbeth predicts that he will really need a makeover if he wants to appear innocent. She tells him to "Look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under ’t"(1.5.56-58). By this she means, he should look kind and harmless, but strike like the deadly snake underneath it. As we know, after Macbeth does the deed he begins to act a little cray. Good thing Lady M can use the tips she learned from Queer Eye to help with her tragic husband.

#2. The End of The F***ing World

Everyone whose seen TEOTFW knows Alyssa is a total badass. In many ways, she resembles Lady Macbeth. Both know what they want and get it, have that fearless nature, and possess complete dominance over their partner. Watching the first few episodes of TEOTFW, Alyssa seems as if she knows exactly what she is doing and is not anxious about anything at all. While her "won't take crap" attitude lasts the whole series, her nervous and miserable mental state are exhibited towards the end. Just like Lady Macbeth, Alyssa is extremely skilled at hiding her true emotion to those she comes into contact with. It isn't until she is filled to the top with overwhelming thoughts and feelings that she begins to show them. Lady Macbeth is so occupied with keeping her husband together that she does not display any signs of her current mental state- which is distress. To the audience, she appears as if she is empty- or honestly just a cold-hearted woman. However, this is not true as her regret and guilt lead her the point of taking her own life. I think it's safe to say Alyssa is a reincarnated Lady M, who's just better at showing her vulnerability.
#3. Heathers
My opinion may be bias, but there is no better movie than Heathers to plot the murder of someone who's of high status. Even if Lady M isn't watching it, for this reason, she's unquestionably watching it for young Christian Slater- who wouldn't.
In Heathers, Veronica is part of the most popular clique at her high school: Heather, Heather, and Heather. Disapproving of the girls' cruel behavior, Veronica plans to confront the group's leader, Heather C. However, things take a turn when Veronica starts dating J.D.( Christian Slater) and the pair end up accidentally killing Heather. How do they do this you ask? Liquid drain cleaner. Very efficient, I must say. If only Lady M watched Heathers before plotting Duncan's murder.
Anyways, after they realize Heather is dead, they begin to conspire a way to cover it up so they won't get caught. They do this by writing a fake suicide note (of course), and well, all turns out successful. The clique's leader is gone, and Veronica and the other Heather's are all secretly happy about it. But, Veronica's actions eventually come with guilt and regret. Just like Lady M, her ambition leads her to detrimental results. One, realizing her boyfriend is intentionally killing students he doesn't like, and two, lifting one of the other Heathers up to the status of the new clique leader.
#4. CAM
This movie is essentially just one whole appearance vs. reality ploy. Alice, a cam girl who goes by the name Lola, is striving her way up to the top of the rank board on the site, Freegirls.Live. Alice continues to push her boundaries and put on original performances, to reach the top 50. She finally decides to travel to a popular camming studio to put on the craziest show she ever has, in hopes of securing her rank. After a successful cam show, Alice logs into her account the next morning to find that she's locked out. Moments later, she realizes her account is somehow live and watches an exact replica of herself in her cam room. As Alice is still locked out from her account, the Lola clone continues to put on live shows and interact with fans as if she is the real deal. Her fans have no suspicions of this clone not actually being the real Lola, as Alice herself is even able to interact with it. As the movie comes to an end, Alice devises a plan to turn the game on her clone and win her account back.
Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are able to go the entirety of the play without their cruel acts rising to the surface. Although Macbeth transforms into an alternate version of himself, which escalates suspicion, Lady M is real good at pretending she is an innocent wife to everyone but her husband.
#5. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The weird sisters. Need I say more? We all know why Lady Macbeth would be watching this one. Witches, demons, girl power, and more witches. It's pretty obvious that Lady M is a believer of the supernatural and its power, so CAOS basically just attests to that. When Lady M calls upon supernatural forces to fill her with cruelty so that she can go through with what needs to be done to secure the prophecy given to her husband from the three WITCHES, it either worked or gave her the false courage to execute it (no pun intended).
By watching Sabrina and her fellow witches cast spells that disrupt the natural order of things, we see that events don't always play out how they had intended. Even though Lady M doesn't cast any spells, she does disrupt the natural order of things by attempting to secure her husband's "fate". She should have just let the witches figure it out, as they were somehow always able to fix things in the show, smh.

LOVED THIS BLOG POST!! Seems like you're learning alot in my favorite IB class!! love how connected it to the end of the f****** world, alyssa. love you boo and if you see this Genesky hi:)
ReplyDeleteHey Emi! This blog post was so good, I loved how you included little GIFs. I've always seen these different shows and movies on Netflix and wondered what they were about but never actually watched them. Now I want to go home and have a movie marathon! I loved how you used an informal tone to the post but were able to effectively show what each show was about and how it connected to Lady Macbeth. You make Lady M sound so badass I love it. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis blog post was great! I haven't seen most of these shows so I loved reading about them and how they connect to Lady Macbeth. I think my favorite connection was the link between Lady Macbeth and Alyssa as they both were able to hide their emotions really well. I thought that that was a great comparison to make and shows great analysis of both the text and the show. I also liked when you talked about The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina because the link to the supernatural is really clear! The discussion of fate and free will in relation to both the text and show is really well done. Nice job!
